Amsterdam
Estimated cost: $2200
Amsterdam has been a gay haven for decades. With its legendary tolerance, picturesque canals, and vibrant nightlife scene, the Dutch capital remains one of Europe's most welcoming cities for LGBTQ+ travelers.
The Gay Scene
Reguliersdwarsstraat is the main gay street, packed with bars and clubs. Start at Soho or Taboo for drinks, then head to Club NYX or De Trut (Sunday nights only - a legendary squat party). For leather and fetish, check out Eagle Amsterdam or Club Church. During Pride (first weekend of August), the famous canal parade draws hundreds of thousands.
The Guys
Dutch guys are tall, direct, and refreshingly straightforward. Don't expect games - if they're interested, they'll tell you. The apps are active, and you'll find a good mix of locals and expats. Amsterdam attracts people from all over Europe, so the scene is diverse. English is spoken everywhere, making connections easy.
Safety
Amsterdam is extremely safe and one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world. The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage (2001). You can be completely yourself here - PDA is totally normal and accepted. The main safety concern is bike theft and pickpockets in tourist areas, not anything LGBTQ+ related.
What to Do
Beyond the nightlife, Amsterdam offers world-class museums (Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House), beautiful canal walks, and incredible Indonesian food (a Dutch colonial legacy). Rent a bike and explore like a local. Take a day trip to Utrecht or The Hague. And yes, the coffee shops are an experience worth having at least once.
The Bottom Line
Amsterdam is pricey but worth it for the combination of history, culture, and complete freedom to be yourself. The gay scene is mature and established, the guys are friendly, and the city itself is absolutely beautiful. Just bring a rain jacket - Dutch weather is unpredictable.
